The Danube is the second-longest river in Europe. Running through many major cities, like Vienna, Budapest, and Belgrade, the Danube has been an urban, agricultural, and industrial dumping ground for years. The result was systemic pollution , especially from excessive nutrients, organic material, and hazardous substances. Unfortunately, given the length of the Danube and the many countries involved, it is not a simple prospect to reduce pollution from every source. To combat the problem, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River ( ICPDR ) has coordinated monitoring along the entire river basin. Without baseline data to compare from place to place, individual countries have little incentive to make changes. (more…)
