Pad-L: A Portable Waterproof LED Light

AltusLumen specializes in making non-toxic, portable LED lights. A couple of years ago, I first reviewed their first product: the Tri-L light — it was a well-engineered LED work light. Recently, I got the chance to test out their new outdoor light, the Pad-L.The Pad-L is water-resistant and made with recyclable aluminum and polycarbonate. It contains no mercury or heavy metals.

It runs on four AAA batteries, which can power the light up to 36 hours continuously. You can of course use rechargeable AAA batteries to power the light (see my review The Best Rechargeable Batteries of 2009).

The Pad-L has four bright LEDs. Pressing the power button, switches betwen four levels of brightness. At the highest level, this lamp is truly bright, enough to completely light up a campsite or dark room. At this highest level, the batteries last for about one hour, when continuously powered on.

The light can also flash in any of the four levels, if you hold the power button for 3 seconds. It has a small warning LED that flashes one minute before the light runs out of power, giving you time get find some new batteries if necessary.

The case has many different mounting options. You can turn the cover completely around to use as a stand. The Pad-L also has a built in wire stand that you can use to hang the light. It also comes with a headphone cable manager, which is actually used for holding a piece of twine or wire that you provide for hanging the light.

AltusLumen has a “Take and Share” program. For every online order, they will contribute 20% of their sales to the Lighting the Place Foundation. The money in the fund will be used to produce solar rechargeable LED which will be donated to places that lack of electricity.

The Pad-L Outdoor LED Light is priced at $40 and available from Amazon.
